Istanbul Music Festival
The Istanbul Music Festival, organized by IKVS for the first time in 1973, is appreciated by music enthusiasts in Turkey and at the international level thanks to its creative program. The festival contributes to the enhancement of the classical music repertoire, hosting prestigious orchestras and ensembles such as the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra throughout its 47 years of history. The 48th Istanbul Music Festival took place this year between 18 September – 5 October
Istanbul Jazz Festival
The Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized by IKVS in July each year since 1994, introduces the works of the artists in Turkey to the world while bringing music lovers and artists together. The festival reaches to tens of thousands of spectators in various concert and event venues such as Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theater, the Hagia Irene Museum, Istanbul Archeology Museums, Esma Sultan Mansion, Camialtı Shipyard, and Beykoz Kundura. The Istanbul Jazz Festival is not only limited to jazz music, but also includes unique works which combine electronic music and jazz, and various genres such as rock, pop, blues, reggae, funk, world music.
The Istanbul Biennial, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) every two years since 1987, brings together artists and art enthusiasts from different cultural backgrounds. The biennial, organized for the sixteenth time last year, enables the creation of an international cultural network among art circles, artists, curators and critics at home and abroad, while presenting the most up-to-date works of art to the audience. The 16th Istanbul Biennial, held in seven different venues, hosted 56 artists from 25 countries.
Istanbul Design Biennial
The Istanbul Design Biennial, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) every two years since 2012, is home to exhibitions, projects and events where different design ideas are presented. The fifth Design Biennial, curated by Mariana Pestana, Sumitra Upham and Billie Muraben, started in October 2020.
Istanbul Theater Festival
The Istanbul Theater Festival, which will be held by IKSV for the 24th time this year, introduces local and foreign theater and dance groups to the audience. Theater audiences have the opportunity to enjoy national and international, classical and contemporary interpretations during the festival, which lasts for two weeks in November each year.
The world’s best examples of Turkish and international contemporary art are introduced to art lovers around the world at Contemporary Istanbul, which is held in September each year. Contemporary Istanbul, which intends to provide a platform for Istanbul’s thriving art scene, growing art market and collectors, will bring contemporary art galleries, artists, collectors and art lovers from many different countries together in its 15th event which will be held in December this year.
Mamut Art Project
Every year, the Mamut Art Project introduces the works of new and promising artists to collectors, curators, galleries, culture and art institutions and art enthusiasts. The last Mamut Art Project event, where works of independent contemporary artists in painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, street arts and many other branches could be seen, was held in YapıKredi bomontiada on 27 October-8 November 2020.
Based Istanbul, which has a free monthly magazine and website with the same name, intends to form a new platform for the creative scene in Istanbul. All artistic developments notably in culture, art, fashion, architecture, design, cinema and music in Istanbul can be followed on Based Istanbul, which is a platform reflecting views of established and promising individuals from international area and Turkey.
Akbank Jazz Festival
Organized in Istanbul since 1991, the festival includes some of the world’s most important jazz musicians as well as promising new names. In addition to classical and modern jazz, the Akbank Jazz Festival also presents various electronic and world music projects and appeals to all music enthusiasts. Numerous major names such as Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Roberto Fonseca, Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous, Nils Peter Molvear, Anouar Brahem Trio, Abdullah Ibrahim, Aydın Esen, Betty Carter Trio performed in the festival, which is held in various venues such as Akbank Art, the Hagia Irene Museum, Babylon, Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, Zorlu Center PSM.
Babylon Soundgarden, held in Yapı Kredi bomontiada last April, offers different concerts as well as creative talks, workshops and activities to music lovers. In the past years, the festival has hosted world-famous musicians, including Milky Chance, Kings of Convenience, Jamie Woon, John Talabot, Pet Shop Boys, Oscar and the Wolf, Nouvelle Vague.
One Love Festival
The One Love Festival, organized by Pozitif with support of the main sponsor Birlikte Güzel, was held in 2002 with the names such as Gotan Project and Manu Chao. The festival feels the pulse of the musical trends and stands out with alternative stages and festival area activities. The event met with the music lovers again in 2019 following a small break after 2015. Morrissey, Pulp, Moby, Peter Gabriel, the Black Eyed Peas, the Chemical Brothers, Ian Brown, Roisin Murphy, Suede and Groove Armada are among the major musicians performed at the One Love Festival.
Red Bull Music Festival
The Red Bull Music Festival, which was held in Istanbul for the first time in 2018, welcomes leading artists from across the world and Turkey in various venues throughout the city. The festival, which took place between 1-15 October last year, hosted many prominent artists such as Ata Kak, Ammar 808, Undomondo, Demdike Stare, Michael England, Ceza, Linn da Quebrada.Undomondo, Demdike Stare, Michael England, Ceza, Linn da Quebrada.
The festival Sónar was launched in Barcelona in 1994 and has been organized in various cities of the world since 2002, combining the modern face of electronic music with creativity and technology. It was held in Turkey in 2017 for the first time. Sponsored by the 100% Music, the Sónar Istanbul offers a 360-degree experience to art lovers by presenting electronic music, audio and visual performances, digital art, exhibitions, workshops and talks. The artists hosted by Sónar Istanbul include Moderat, Modeselektor, Ben Frost, George Fitzgerald, Henrick Schwarz and Fatboy Slim.
PSM Jazz Festival
With the motto of “jazz festival of all music”, the PSM Jazz Festival brings together master artists and young talents of blues, electronic, world, funk, indie, classical, pop and rock music. In addition to concerts, PSM Jazz Festival offers a versatile culture and art experience with concept parties, panels, workshops where different concepts are processed, and film screenings. Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Michel Camilo, Arnlafur Arnalds, Fazıl Say, Kerem Görsev, Chris Botti and Bobby McFerrin stand out among the artists hosted by the festival.
